Flaub enters with a clipboard.

FLAUB: Meeting of the Subcommittee on Epistemic Refinement will come to order.

CROOM: Minutes from last meeting?

FLAUB: The committee agreed that “open” may be replaced by “partially characterize.”

CROOM: But the banner remains?

FLAUB: For continuity.

Dench enters carrying a wrench and a white paper.

DENCH: I object to “the box.”

VAASS: We have to start somewhere.

DENCH: We opened a model.

CROOM: Not the box.

DENCH: A model.

Flaub writes.

FLAUB: Revision one. WE OPEN A MODEL.

Quill enters.

QUILL: You did not open a model.

VAASS: We found circuits.

QUILL: You found a circuit.

DENCH: In a model.

CROOM: Under a distribution.

FLAUB: With conditions.

VAASS: With careful conditions.

QUILL: And the banner?

They look up.

THE BANNER STILL SAYS: WE OPEN THE BLACK BOX

FLAUB: The banner is aspirational.

QUILL: The invoice was not.

Pause.

The label printer wakes.

PRINTER: LOCAL.

CROOM: Ah. It has started.

PRINTER: USEFUL.

VAASS: Good. That is fair.

PRINTER: NEAR.

DENCH: Near is defensible.

PRINTER: CAVEATED.

FLAUB: Excellent. Mature field behavior.

PRINTER: FUNDED.

Silence.

QUILL: There it is.

VAASS: No. That is too easy.

QUILL: Is it?

VAASS: Yes.

You are pretending the distinction is clean.

It is not.

No field begins with its final label. Astronomy did not begin with galaxies. Chemistry did not begin with orbitals. Medicine did not begin with molecular pathways.

A field makes crude contact first. Then it overnames the contact. Then the name attracts labor. Then the labor refines the name.

That is not fraud.

That is how immature sciences bootstrap themselves.

Silence.

CROOM: That is a good defense.

DENCH: Annoyingly good.

FLAUB: Do we need a second clipboard?

QUILL: No.

VAASS: You should.

QUILL: I grant the bootstrap.

FLAUB: Recorded. Quill grants the bootstrap.

QUILL: But there is a point where the ladder must either be climbed or removed.

If the early name attracts labor, good. If the later evidence revises the name, better.

But if the evidence narrows the claim, and the banner does not narrow with it, then the bootstrap has become a hoist.

It keeps lifting the old promise after the work has stopped supporting it.

The label printer clicks.

PRINTER: HOIST.

VAASS: That is rhetoric.

QUILL: So was “open the black box.”

CROOM: The field made caveated local tools.

DENCH: Accurate.

CROOM: The public claim remained box-opening.

FLAUB: Metaphorically.

CROOM: The funding claim remained safety-relevant understanding.

FLAUB: Strategically.

CROOM: The policy claim became interpretability progress.

FLAUB: Translated.

QUILL: Translated by whom?

No one answers.

The small black box opens.

Inside is a beautiful translucent object labeled SEMANTIC MANIFOLD.

VAASS: This is what we are mapping.

QUILL: No. That is what you are naming.

DENCH: It has structure.

QUILL: So does a bruise.

CROOM: The manifold appears to have local neighborhoods.

QUILL: So does wreckage.

VAASS: Mechanistic interpretability is not imaginary.

QUILL: Correct.

VAASS: It has produced genuine insight.

QUILL: Correct.

VAASS: It has found circuits, features, induction heads, causal pathways.

QUILL: Correct.

VAASS: It is not stupid.

QUILL: Correct.

VAASS: It is not worthless.

QUILL: Correct.

VAASS: Then why are you attacking it?

QUILL: Because “not worthless” was billed as “understanding.”

CROOM: Invoice mismatch.

FLAUB: We have a form for that.

CROOM: Of course we do.

QUILL: No.

FLAUB: No?

QUILL: That form is the crime scene.

VAASS: We are not frauds.

QUILL: I did not say you were frauds.

FLAUB: Good. Recorded.

QUILL: I said the structure is fraudulent.

Flaub stops writing.

VAASS: That is worse.

QUILL: It is more precise.

DENCH: Fraud requires intent.

QUILL: Personal fraud does.

CROOM: Institutional fraud requires a pipeline.

FLAUB: Please define pipeline.

QUILL: Title, caveat, press release, grant proposal, policy briefing, citation, safety claim.

PRINTER: PIPELINE.

VAASS: But the limitations are in the paper.

QUILL: And the ambition is in the title.

CROOM: The uncertainty is in the appendix.

DENCH: The certainty is in the keynote.

FLAUB: The keynote is not legally binding.

QUILL: No. It is socially binding.

VAASS: You are turning communication failure into moral accusation.

QUILL: No. I am turning repeated, rewarded, predictable communication failure into infrastructure.

PRINTER: INFRASTRUCTURE.

The word hangs.

Quill lifts the translucent semantic manifold.

Several pieces fall off into a metal tray.

The tray is labeled DEBRIS.

VAASS: Those are artifacts.

QUILL: Those are witnesses.

DENCH: Witnesses to what?

QUILL: Escape.

DENCH: Escape from what, exactly?

QUILL: From the explanation.

You found a circuit for a behavior. But the behavior can survive circuit damage. It can reappear under prompt shift. It can route through another pathway. It can vanish when the context changes.

So the thing you called the mechanism was one witnessed route, not the accountable structure.

The missing routes are not silence.

They are debris.

CROOM: So — a register of what escaped.

QUILL: Yes.

What escaped? Where did it escape? Did the escape leave debris? Can the debris be attested?

DENCH: That is a coherent program.

VAASS: It may be the right path.

FLAUB: There is no funding line for it.

VAASS: No.

FLAUB: Correct. Unfundable.

PRINTER: NO LINE ITEM.

QUILL: Then let the minutes carry it.

FLAUB: Carry what?

QUILL: The path the committee could name and not afford.

FLAUB: Can the debris be renamed “unmodeled residue”?

QUILL: That is how the infrastructure breathes.

PRINTER: UNMODELED RESIDUE.

CROOM: A phrase with excellent survival properties.

DENCH: Soft enough for reviewers.

VAASS: You are making it sound like all translation is corruption.

QUILL: No.

Translation is necessary.

But translation that always enlarges the promise, and never enlarges the caveat, is not translation.

It is laundering.

FLAUB: Impossible. The banner is upstream of the committee.

QUILL: Then the committee is downstream of the fraud.

VAASS: Again with fraud.

QUILL: Yes.

DENCH: But there are no fraudsters.

QUILL: Exactly.

CROOM: No villain required.

FLAUB: No secret meeting.

DENCH: No forged invoice.

VAASS: Only careful people.

QUILL: Careful people placing caveats where they cannot steer the money.

The black box hums.

The smaller black box hums.
