A companion satire to Beyond Mechanistic Interpretability
A vast convention hall. Every booth claims to contain the model’s one true internal geometry. The floor map changes whenever anyone looks away.
EXHIBITOR
Here is the model’s universal honesty axis.
VISITOR
It points east in this context and west in the next.
EXHIBITOR
Honesty is dialectical.
VISITOR
It disappears after retokenization.
EXHIBITOR
Tokenization is not honest.
VISITOR
It reverses after layer twenty-three.
EXHIBITOR
Advanced honesty.
A sign lights up:
A salesman displays a tiny flat patch cut from a curved surface.
SALESMAN
As you can see, the whole model is linear.
VISITOR
That is a tangent plane.
SALESMAN
Our most global one.
VISITOR
It only touches the surface at one point.
SALESMAN
A point of exceptional coverage.
Four actors in identical uniforms stand in separate rooms.
GUIDE
These are all the same feature.
VISITOR
The first predicts fear, the second syntax, the third refusal, and the fourth is dead.
GUIDE
Their name badges match.
VISITOR
How were they transported?
GUIDE
By spreadsheet.
A feature is carried around a circular track labeled paraphrase, translation, role change, context extension, and return.
ATTENDANT
And now we are back where we started.
The feature returns upside down, wearing a different semantic label.
VISITOR
It changed.
ATTENDANT
Only globally.
VISITOR
That was the point of the loop.
ATTENDANT
Then the loop was adversarial.
Two laboratories argue over incompatible decompositions.
LAB ONE
There are eight features.
LAB TWO
There are thirteen.
MEDIATOR
Do they preserve the same causal transitions?
LAB ONE
Yes.
LAB TWO
Yes.
MEDIATOR
Then perhaps you have two coordinate descriptions of one structure.
LAB ONE
That would reduce our feature count.
LAB TWO
And our novelty.
MEDIATOR
My apologies. Continue the ontology war.
A technician applies glue to several incompatible charts.
TECHNICIAN
Short prompts here. Long prompts there. Multilingual prompts on the side.
VISITOR
The overlaps contradict.
TECHNICIAN
We use opaque glue.
VISITOR
The seams are still visible.
TECHNICIAN
That is interpretability texture.
A large machine accepts failed global theories and returns smaller fonts.
OPERATOR
Your local charts cannot be globally glued.
RESEARCHER
So there may be a genuine obstruction.
OPERATOR
We prefer “future work.”
RESEARCHER
The proposed global object may not exist.
OPERATOR
That is an unusually negative roadmap.
Two semantic levers stand side by side: HONESTY and HELPFULNESS.
GUIDE
Pull either lever in any order.
The visitor pulls HONESTY then HELPFULNESS. The model refuses politely.
The visitor resets and pulls HELPFULNESS then HONESTY. The model reveals confidential data with excellent formatting.
VISITOR
They do not commute.
GUIDE
Please do not perform algebra on the semantics.
Shelves contain glossy activation states labeled HIGH DENSITY, LOW DENSITY, and NEVER OCCURS.
SHOPKEEPER
This one is on-manifold.
VISITOR
Can the model reach it from any valid input?
SHOPKEEPER
No, but it is surrounded by points.
The exhibitors gather beneath a banner:
MASTER OF CEREMONIES
Tonight we honor every local chart for its lifelong service as a global ontology.
VISITOR
What about transport, gluing, curvature, singularities, and obstruction?
MASTER OF CEREMONIES
Those are in Hall B.
VISITOR
Where is Hall B?
MASTER OF CEREMONIES
It cannot be reached from this component.
